Basic Electricity by Van Valkenburgh is a very good book that may help in the understanding of the first principles used in more specific power systems books.

A good book in power for non-power majors is "Electric Circuit Analysis and Technology" by John Bird.
This book gives a detailed discussion of basic concepts in electric circuits, machines, and power systems. The book presented a lot of examples and exercises with answers. This is really good for beginners.

rgfault,

Many thanks for the suggestion, but I was unable to find a book by the title you gave. Could I just verify whether it was a book entitled "Electrical Circuit Theory and Technology" that you were recommending?

Many thanks.
